Dance, Sing, Stretch and Meditate in Ubud in December

a weekend festival celebrating dance, yoga, active meditation, sound healing and live music will the held at The Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali December 7-9, 2012.

The Indonesian Ministry of Creative Economy, BaliSpirit Festival and The Yoga Barn jointly sponsor the event

Sapta Nirwandar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, said the festival will help attract tourist visitors to Bali while building awareness and respect for local culture.

The Indonesia Spirit Event will continue the Yoga Barn’s program of popular classes and seminars led by world-renowned presenters such as Anya Phelan (Nia Dance); Theva Indrasenan (Estatic Dance); Dr. Diane Butler Ph.D (21 Moments of Stillness); together with distinguished Indonesian presenters: Pak Suprapto Suryodharmo from Solo, Central Java (Joged Amerta); Yayasan Krysata Guna (Gamelan) and Bali's own Ratu Bagus (Laughter & Shaking).

“Ubud is a beacon for conscious travelers nationally and the world over,” said I Made Gunarta, Co-founder of The Yoga Barn and the BaliSpirit Group, “This is an amazing opportunity to create an international community gathering that is focused on promoting Indonesia.”

According to Gunarta, the event expects to draw 300 guests to Ubud. A portion of the proceeds from the mini-Festival will go to the Ayo! Kita Bicara HIV/AIDS outreach program.

Created by the founders of the BaliSpirit Festival, Ayo! is a school initiative that improves awareness and education among kids regarding the growing threat of HIV/AIDS in Bali. The program has already positively impacted thousands of Balinese in less than 3 years, mostly through educational programs in local schools and record-breaking community concerts.

The opening ceremony of Indonesia Spirit which will feature the screening of the documentary film, “Bali: Life is an Offering" on Friday December 7, 2012, together with a special Gamelan Masters Tribute in collaboration Gamelan Salukat, in collaboration with Kryasta Guna Foundation.

Free Things to do in Bali, easy ways to save on your holiday budget....

Spending your holiday in Bali can get pretty expensive despite the island being part of Indonesia. Luckily there are still many great things you can do to discover the beauties of the island without spending one single Dollar or Rupiah.
Here we have listed 10 free things to do in Bali which you can use to fill up a couple of days of your holiday.

Witness a temple ceremony:
Ceremonies and religious festivals are a big happening in Bali especially if it's an important one.
If you happen to be in Bali during for example Kuningan, Gulungan or during a temple ceremony then you will be in for a treat which is totally free.
Hundreds of beautifully dressed Balinese carrying amazing offerings will gather at a temple throughout the day. On these days you don't even need to enter the temple grounds as you will be able to view typical Balinese scenes right at the entrance.

Admire the arts and crafts of Bali:
Bali is famous for its works of art such as paintings, stone and wood carving, textile and jewelry. Around Ubud you can find many little villages that specialize in a specific form of art.
You can either visit their workshops along the road and many side roads where the art is made. Here they love to tell you how it's made and which tools they use.

Walk through the rice fields of Ubud:
This is one of the best of the free things to do in Bali. We can't get enough of it and we always go for a stroll whenever we are there.
There is a small trail in Campuhan Ubud taking you right through the wonderful green rice fields. Walk till the end of Jalan Kajeng and from there just keep to the most obvious trail and you won't get lost.
The walk takes about an 1 to 1,5 hour and is best done in the morning or before sunset. Don't forget to order a refreshing drink at the Organic Restaurant. O wait that will cost you...
 

 Gaze at the sunset at the Bali beaches:
Nature offers the best free things to do in Bali such as the amazing sunsets that attract hundreds of people everyday to the beaches.
From Kuta beach all the way to Seminyak is probably the most popular place to watch the Bali sunsets. Everyday you can expect different colors and patterns.
If you want a bit of more romance and prefer to have the feeling of owning the entire beach then head to Lovina beach in the North, Candidasa in the East or go to Nusa Lembongan. For the early risers or the ones suffering from jet leg you can wake up to a beautiful sunrise at Sanur or Nusa Dua beach...

 Tour aimlessly through the countryside:
Technically this is one of the few free things to do in Bali that is not entirely for nothing since you'll need to rent a bike or motorbike for this.
But if you already have one on hand then it is fun to drive through the little village hamlets of Ubud. Here you can still find scenes from decades ago, as if time has stood still.
If you have the entire day then driving around East Bali is the best way to explore the real Bali. Check out one of our favorite routes from Candidasa to Ubud.

 Hiking around the mountains and fields:
Hiking in Bali can be done without a guide if it doesn't involve hiking up a mountain such as Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur. For these hikes it is essential to have a knowledgeable guide as the trails are not always that obvious.
But many accommodations such as those in Munduk, near Batu Karu, Tirta Gangga or Candidasa offer detailed maps with trails.
They will take you along rivers, through local villages and their rice fields. Leave early in the day and take enough water and food with you just in case you do get a bit lost...

Go snorkeling:
The best snorkeling sites are reached by boat such as those in Menjangan island and Nusa Lembongan. But there are a couple of snorkeling sites in Bali which you can reach from the beach. So there is no need for renting a boat....
In Padangbai you have the Bloo Lagoon beach where you can jump straight into the water with your gear on. Other sites are the Japanese wreck at Aas beach in Amed and from Pemuteran you have good access from the resorts especially Taman Sari Resort and Spa.

Stroll along the beach:
If you want to be a bit more active on your Bali holiday then you can walk miles on end along several beaches.
Sanur has a paved walk-way that takes you along its beach and along many shops, restaurants and resorts. If you are lucky you even have a view of Gunung Agung.
On the other side of the island you can start off your walk at Tuban beach and continue along Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and ending in Canggu beach. It's a wonderful way to watch people surf, flying kites, swim and having fun on the beach....

Watch surfers tackle the Bali waves:
As you can tell many free things to do in Bali involve around the beach like watching great surfers riding big waves. If you don't surf it is still great fun to watch especially if its from a beautiful Bali beach.
Head to Uluwatu beach to witness the best waves or go to the laid-back Padang Padang, Bingin or Balangan beach to enjoy the tropical setting while checking out the moves of beginners and advanced surfers.

Join the fishermen at Jimbaran beach:
Early in the morning fishermen in traditional fishing boats head into sea to catch their share of fresh fish which is then sold to thousands of hotels and restaurants in Bali.
At Jimbaran beach you can see them come back in with nets full of fish and how the catch is then packed in ice to be brought to the fish market. It's another great place to witness how things are done in Bali. If you are coming from Europe, Australia or U.S.A. it is likely to be done differently then at home...;-)

South Bali Beaches -- Jimbaran

Jimbaran beach is one of the finest of the south Bali beaches, it’s wide, long (5km) and it is perfect for jogging or swimming.
The white sandy beach is located just south of the international Ngurah Rai airport but you won’t notice any of the noise.

When you arrive early in the morning you can see the fishermen coming back with their catch in the half-moon shaped bay of Jimbaran. The women come up to the boats and help to unload the fish. Afterwards they sort and sell them on the market.

Most of the fish ends up in the luxurious hotels of Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Kuta, Sanur or on your plate in the evening ;-)
If you like to make a tour around the coast of the south Bali beaches or along Jimbaran reef, the fishermen will be happy to take you along on their colourful boats.
Since the reef is far out, it’s not really suitable to surf here.
At the end of the Jimbaran beach, at the southern side, you can find the Pura Ulun Siwi temple which is worth a visit. This temple was built in the 17th century by the Mengwi dynasty and is now maintained by rice farmers.
Rice farmers in Jimbaran?
Yep, the temple is built to honor Dewi Sri, the rice goddess and it’s the most important rice temple on the whole of Bali island.
Jimbaran beach is also home to several very good seafood restaurants and you have to try it out whether you stay in Kuta, the Intercontinental hotel Bali or the Four Seasons in Jimbaran. It’s practically just around the corner.

You can just sit here with your toes in the sand while enjoying one of the best seafood platters around and watching the amazing sunset.
When it gets dark the staff lights up the candles at your table and then it’s time for some more romance ;-)

South Bali Beaches -- Balangan

There are two roads leading to Balangan beach. One is a side road just before entering the Dreamland gates. This one is well paved and leads through a couple of Balinese villages until you arrive at the dirt road that takes you to the beach.
If you are travelling by car it can get pretty bumpy from here. It makes it easier to go by motor bike.
We took the road from Dreamland Beach. It passes the newly built Comfort Inn hotel and leads to a small road through bushes where the cows are grazing peacefully and where there are a couple of thatched farmer’s huts. We soon ended up at the dirt road to the beach.
Sometimes you might feel that you are lost but don’t worry you are on the right road...
There are hardly any signs to one of the most secluded south Bali beaches. You will only see signs improvised by small hotels. However once you arrive at these hotels you know you’re almost there.
There’s a small parking area for your car or motor bike, the rest is walking on the rocky path down to the beach.
Ahhh what a sight...

Ready to book a ticket..?

The beautiful white beach has soft sand where you can stroll without any of the pushy hawkers or masseurs. It’s a very romantic spot, quiet and perfect for watching the sunset or just to spend a couple of days.
At low tide you can perfectly cool down in the puddles just along the coast or walk to two deserted beaches for some more privacy.
On the outer left side of Balangan beach you can watch surfers catch fantastic waves coming from the left side. To get to the surf area you need some rubber footwear because there are lots of rocks, which can make nasty cuts.

Enjoying one of nature's gifts...

There are a couple of Balinese styled sea view cottages catered to the surf crowd and other independent travellers.
Parasols and beach chairs are there waiting for you to come and laze, read a book or watch little Balinese kids searching for clams together with their parents.
This is definitely one of my favorite of the south Bali beaches ;-)

South Bali Beaches -- Dreamland

Dreamland beach is located south of Kuta, half way to Uluwatu. It is an amazingly beautiful strip of beach that is located right at the cliffs.
The last time we were at Dreamland there was just one restaurant at the beach. But we expect some big changes in a short period of time.
There was a lot of construction work going on so there might be more restaurants and shops coming in the near future. The white sandy beach has clean soft sand.
Most of the people rent one of the many beach chairs to enjoy some sunbathing along the beautiful sea.
However if you walk further to the right the beach becomes less crowded and sometimes it feels as if you are the only one on the whole beach.

You can have the feeling of being the only one here...

The water is good for swimming, but in the late afternoon the tides can switch quickly and big waves can suddenly appear. Every time we wanted to go for a swim, the low tide would set in and a rocky shore would appear.
Just like most of the other south Bali beaches there is a current that can make swimming difficult and somewhat dangerous. So check it out first before going into the water.
Surfers on the other hand appeared in large numbers to catch the waves. I could see that the waves are pretty good and excellent for intermediate surfers.
In this picture they seemed to be having a ball...

Sadly the people who used to live at Dreamland had to pay a heavy price for this amazing beach setting.
Tommy Soeharto, the former president's youngest son saw the beauty of the beach as well and included it in his plan of developing the area.
However the 200 Balinese families who were living here were not part of the plan and they were cleared from the land together with their temples and fruit orchards.
After Tommy’s arrest, the development plan was terminated for a couple of years. Today the land is still barren except for the 4 lane road to the beach.
In the beginning of 2008 there were some changes going on: there was a golf course overlooking the sea and the Comfort Inn hotel had also just started their construction work. Another huge hotel group had also just finalized the construction of their resort.

So it looks like the development plan has continued again and that in a couple of years the complex will be another tourist lure with big hotels and many shops.
Nevertheless, if you are in the area then you should definitely go see Dreamland. Just head towards the south Bali beaches and follow the signs to Uluwatu. Halfway you will see a huge entrance of Pecatu Graha.
Drive in and follow the road till you end up at a car park. Make sure that you have arranged a ride back. It can be a hassle to arrange one from Dreamland and drivers waiting at the entrance offer unreasonable prices. Expect to pay Rp.50.000 for one way.
It is often said that the former land owners stand at the entrance with a sign which tells the visitor about the land that has been stolen from them and that they ask for an admission fee because they have no source of income anymore.
However we didn’t see any of these signs and if we had not known about the history of Dreamland we wouldn’t have guessed that there was a heavy conflict just a decade ago.

You do have to pay Rp. 10.000 at the car park about 100m from the beach but this is not unusual in Bali.
If you are on the motor bike you can drive all the way up to the stairs leading to the wonderful beach. You will definitely have a great time there...

South Bali Beaches -- Bingin

Bingin beach is a very secluded beach, which means you have to put some effort to get there. But once you are at the beach you can catch your breath while watching the unforgettable ocean view.
You can reach the beach by driving towards Uluwatu. At Pecatu you have to turn left and then right at the junction. From there you will see small handwritten signs showing you the way to the beach. So keep your eyes peeled...
There are several dirt-roads you can take that lead you to the beach. At the end of one dirt road a lady told us that it would be a 15 minute walk, 5 minutes through the bushes and then 10 minutes down to the beach.
There wasn’t really a path so it looked more like a hike than a walk to me...

The beach with a view to the south...

We decided to take another turn further north. From there the villagers are happy to point you to the right direction and show you where you can park your car or motorbike.
Don’t expect to see the beach yet...It takes another 10 minutes by foot to get there. A lady showed us the way between village houses, along narrow paths and home stays. We were pretty much walking in their backyard...
After climbing down the stairs we finally ended up at the beach. We were surprised that despite the heavy hike, there were a lot of restaurants and places where you can spend the night.
The places aren’t fancy but hey, they are built on the cliffs and have the best view you can get.
Most rooms have balconies right on the beach overlooking the dark blue ocean. This is an ideal spot for surfers to wait for the big waves to come...

When we were at Binging there were a lot of waves and people surfing. This is one of those south Bali beaches, which are perfect for die hard surfing; the surf break comes from the left side and challenges the very best surfer.
Sunbathers will be disappointed here because the beach is very narrow so there is not a lot of space to work on your tan.
Like most of the south Bali beaches, Bingin is a great beach located right below the cliffs and has a laid back atmosphere. It’s also an ideal spot to relax and chat with the local people.
But to get there, prepare for a heavy work-out because once you have climbed down the stairs to the beach, you have to climb up again. A good exercise on your holiday...

South Bali Beaches -- Padang Padang

When we saw Padang Padang beach for the first time, all that we could say was: “wow!!” From the road we could see the beautiful bay with white sand and for kilometers on end there was just the magnificent clear green-blue emerald colored water.

Do I need to say more..?

To get to this part of the south Bali beaches, drive towards Uluwatu and turn right at Pecatu. Follow the road until it splits at a junction, then turn left. You will definitely see signs to the beach from here.
There is parking space just across the road from the beach.
Once you have passed the small temple you need to go down some stairs, where it can be very narrow. Watch your head when you enter the ‘cave’. At the end of the cave you'll be standing upright in the soft white sand.

We were there in the afternoon and at that time there was hardly any waves. We are not sure what the best time is to catch some waves but we saw many surfers on the beach waiting for them.
Not surprisingly, because this beach is known to be one of the best surf spots in the world.
The beach is also very popular for sunbathers and swimmers. You can spend the whole day lazing at Padang Padang. There are enough warungs (Indonesian food stalls) where you can have lunch or grab a snack.

A beautiful place to spend the day at the beach...

A lot of people found shade under the foundation of an unfinished building, but in the back of the beach the high cliffs provide an abundance of shade. Definitely one of those south Bali beaches we want to come back to...
I can go on and on about how amazing this beach is. But I am sure that the pictures say enough...

Surfers paradise at the South Bali Beaches

South Bali Beaches -- Suluban/Uluwatu

Uluwatu Beach or better known as Pantai Suluban have without question the most astonishing ocean colors I have seen on the entire island of Bali.
The emerald green and blue shades make you want to jump in immediately. Unfortunately like other of the south Bali beaches it’s not suitable for swimming because there are a lot of sharp rocks and high waves, which can even reach up to 8m high.

Not great for swimming but excellent for surfing...
This is the epic center of Surfing Mecca on Bali. It’s reachable on your way to Uluwatu’s famous temple, the Pura Luhur Watu. There’s a side road that leads you to a very small car park and some shops with t-shirts and other souvenirs.
Afterwards it’s another 200 m down the stairs to the beach area with a couple of restaurants, repair shops for dings and cheap guest houses.
It is obvious that this is one of the south Bali beaches where surfers meet up and hang around while waiting for the waves to roll in.
If you are not into surfing, you should still pass through. The view is really amazing...one you don’t want to miss on your Bali holiday.

South Bali Beaches -- Nyang Nyang

This beach is probably the most difficult to find and to reach. However with some extra effort and determination you will be rewarded.
If you arrive at the right time of day...
Nyang Nyang beach is located just a couple of kilometers west from the Uluwatu temple. To get there just follow the sign to Pecatu and from there drive on. After several minutes keep your eyes peeled because here comes the difficult bit...

Climb down to the beach...

All of the sudden you will see (when coming from the north) a sign with 'Nyang Nyang Beach Villa Bali'. The sign takes you along a nice pathway and finally to a hotel where the security awaits you.
The staff will explain that you are allowed to go to the beach after purchasing a drink at the hotel. Well...we didn't expect that!
If you are into it, take a seat, have a drink and enjoy the magnificent view on the emerald blue ocean. If you just want to go to the beach or want to surf then you should not follow this sign...

Instead, keep on driving a little bit further and after about 10m you will see a wooden blue painted sign pointing towards a dirt road. Don't hesitate...this is the right way.

The view is worth the trip...

At first we kept on thinking about turning back, but our persistence was soon rewarded when we finally arrived at a little parking area. From there we walked towards the cliff and took in the breathtaking view over the ocean.
Way down, after descending many steps you will finally arrive at Nyang Nyang beach. It is definitely worth going down, but remember that you will have to do a hell of a job of climbing up at the end of the day.
Besides the gorgeous sunsets, Nyang Nyang beach is great for surfing. The best time to go is between March till September early in the day as low tide will soon set in and the waves will be difficult to reach...

South Bali Beaches -- Green Ball

Green ball beach is not really a beach, but an excellent place to go surfing or just be amazed by its beauty.
This beach is the most southern beach of all the south Bali beaches. It is pretty easy to find, just take the road to Uluwatu and follow the signs to the Bali Cliff Resort at the Ungasan junction.
Then turn left just before you enter the resort gates. Just keep on going till you end up at the Pura Mas Suka temple where there are enough parking spaces.

You have to put some effort to be rewarded with something beautiful

The place was deserted, except for a couple of women who try to sell sarongs and offer you massages. We politely declined when one woman started showing us her massage techniques. At the end she stopped and she said that we would probably want one when we returned from the beach...
And after visiting Green Ball beach, I can understand why she thought that might happen...
Like most of the south Bali beaches, Green ball is located in a bay. To get there you have to descend steep stairs. We met a couple who were on their way up. They were panting and sweating heavily...so by then we knew what awaited us.
Nonetheless the whole effort is worth it. Once down, it is just a terrific sight to see wonderful blue ocean colours and waves crashing into the cliffs.
If you want to go surfing, you need to paddle for a while because the waves start to swell pretty far from the shore.

There is no beach to lie on so if you are not surfing, you can sit comfortably on the cement wall at the end of the stairs.
Once you have finally climbed up the stairs, buy a cold drink and sit down to watch, for one more time, the stunning view...or to get a massage from the lady who will probably be waiting for you again.

South Bali Beaches -- Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua beach is what you expect of a tropical beach: beautiful white sandy beaches, trees that provide natural shading, dark blue sea and sunny skies.
Along this section of the south Bali beaches there are many beach resorts which offer high class service. So this is the place to go to if you are planning a real holiday break.
The first thing I noticed when I was on the beach was the soft sand between my toes and the sound of the ocean breeze...it was so quiet. These south Bali beaches are all located on resorts, so there is no noise of traffic.
And on top of that, there are no people offering things to sell. Unlike Kuta Beach bali, hawkers are not allowed to enter this part of the south Bali beaches, so you will definitely not be disturbed when you are enjoying your time at the beach.

Just pure tranquility...

This quietness is definitely unique in Bali. However this has all been planned...
Over the years unplanned tourism has led to negative impacts on the Balinese culture.
Therefore the authorities wanted to decrease further impacts by creating a secluded tourist area that is mainly focused on tourists who have more to spend.
For this reason only 4 and 5 star resorts are found in Nusa Dua and there are no independent stalls, restaurants or other businesses in the near surroundings of the resorts contrary to the other south Bali beaches.
The location for this tourism project was carefully selected as well. Nusa Dua was sparsely populated, has good weather and most importantly beautiful white beaches.
A man made dam in sea ensures that the waves break further off shore which makes it an sea ideal for swimming. Unlike Sanur there’s no seaweed so it feels comfortable when you wade into the water.

Enough space on the wide white beaches...

Besides just going for a relaxing swim, you can also do other water sports at Nusa Dua beach such as diving, water-skiing, jet-skiing and parasailing.
If the hotel doesn't provide these facilities, you can always head to Tanjung Benoa where you’ll find many diving operators there.
At Tanjung Benoa there are even operators who offer one hour cruises in a glass bottomed boat and fishing trips.
If you want to go further off shore there is the Bali Hai who has day trips to Nusa Penida, an island just 30 minutes from Nusa Dua.
This island has amazing underwater sights for snorkelling and diving.
Surfers can find waves too in Nusa Dua. The best surfing is on the reef in front of Club Med. This is also known as ‘Sri Lanka’ and has a right hand break. The other breaks can be reached by boat just south of the Hilton.
No matter how you spend your time in Nusa Dua, expect a beautiful beach where you can relax in style...

There are many things to do in Bali for the active and the somewhat less active traveller.
The Bali landscape offers ideal adventure tours such as rafting and hiking, while the cultural centre Ubud has many courses that travellers can join to create more understanding about the daily life of the friendly Balinese.

Bali hiking:
The mountainous landscape in Bali offers ideal opportunities to go hiking.
A mountain that is visited a lot is Gunung Batur, however the sacred Gunung Agung and many others are climbed as well.
Hiking to the summit is mostly done early in the morning so you are rewarded with a unforgettable sunrise...



Bali diving and snorkelling:
Bali is an ideal island for diving and snorkelling where you can many species of marine life such as nudibranchs, white tip sharks, manta rays, barracudas, turtles.
Most of the diving and snorkelling spots are located on the east coast of Bali and accessible together with dive operators or traditional fishermen...


 
Surfing:
Bali is popular for its great waves.
The famous surf beaches are located around Kuta and Uluwatu, but for the die hard surfers there are also deserted beaches. Surfing lessons are possible as well.
I had a great surfing lesson in Kuta and now I can’t wait to jump on my board again…



Bali Cruises:
There are many things to do in Bali if if you feel like spending the whole day on the water.
Many cruises offer fun activities such as snorkeling, a ride on a banana boat, visit to an island and not to forget the delicious lunch buffet. Cruise operators are mostly found in Sanur and Nusa Dua.


 
Bali Water sports:
When you are tired of lazing at the resort pool there are other things to do in Bali that will give a boost to your energy levels such as para-sailing, jetskiing, banana boat, deep sea fishing and even the underwater experience Seawalker where you have tropical fish eating out of your hand.
Most of the water sports can be arranged at the hotels at Sanur, Tanjung Benoa and Nusa Dua or you can ask the boatmen waiting on the beach.


Bali Dolphin tour:
On of the most memorable things to do in Bali is going on a Dolphin tour in Lovina.
These dolphins gather together every morning around the reef. Don’t be surprised if you see them suddenly swimming next to your boat.
The tours can be arranged in the villages at Lovina and leave just before the sunrise...


 
Bali Rafting:
There are 3 places in Bali which are perfect for rafting: the Ayung River with II-III rapids, the Melangit River with more than 30 falls and the Telaga Waja River where you slide along waterfalls, rice terraces, winding gorges and the tropical rainforest.

There are several companies who offer various whitewater rafting tours...



Bali mountain biking:
One of the best experiences is biking downhill from Gunung Batur all the way to the idyllic village of Ubud.

One of our favourite things to do in Bali is to discover new walking trails in Ubud.
Ubud is ideally located in the hills which has resulted into many great walking opportunities.
Along these trails you can watch the Balinese working in their fields or placing offerings in the many shrines along the road...



Bali Bird Watching:
Just north of Ubud every day thousands of white Heron Birds return home before sunset.
You can watch them land in their nests so get your camera ready.

Bali Golf:
There are 5 golf courses available on Bali.

Bali Parks:
There are several parks you can visit. In the Central of Bali near Ubud you have the Elephant Safari Park in Taro, the Bali Bird Park in Batubulan (with the Reptile Park next door) and the Botanical Gardens at Bratan Lake and Ubud.
There's also the Bali Orchard Garden north of Sanur and the Butterfly Park north of Tabanan.



Bali Waterbom Park Kuta:
This waterpark offers something for everyone with several pools for young an old.
You won't get enough of the 15 exciting waterslides(some with speeds of 60km/h), the superbowl with centrifugal forces, euro-bungy which catapults you 9m high, wall-climbing, restaurants and there is even a spa with reflexology and several massage treatments...

 
Bali Horse Riding:
There are a couple of stables available where they organize horse riding tours.
There's the Bali horse adventure where they offer  1-5 day pony camps at Pererenan Beach in the Canggu area north of Seminyak and there's the Bali Island Horse stable north of the famous Tanah Lot temple. Expect to pay around $35 US for one hour horse riding through rice fields or along the beach.

Bali Accommodations in and around
Kuta Beach

An amazing larger choice of Bali accommodations for such a tiny village...

At the end of the 60’s the Kuta beach area started to attract hippies and surfers who fell in love with its gorgeous beach, the surf breaks, the magic mushrooms and basic Bali accommodations under the palm trees.

After these first flow of travellers all kinds of travellers came to the Kuta beach Bali area to spend their holidays.
Basic accommodation is still widely available but now there’s also a choice of more luxurious Bali styled hotels while enjoying all that Kuta has to offer.
The scars of the bombing of the Sari Nightclub and Paddy’s Nightclub on 12 October 2002 are still visible on many of the hotels in the Bali Kuta beach area.
Some have survived, others have not and some are trying to hold on to the reputation they once had.
It’s of no use recommending Bali accommodations that are in need of maintenance and renovation badly such as the ’80 styled Kuta Beach Club hotel or those that still hang on to their former grandeur such as the Inna Kuta Beach hotel.
Here are a couple of Bali accommodations I came across on my travels which have survived, improved and which are really worth staying at...

Poppies Bali:
In the the heart of the hustle and bustle of Kuta beach there's the quiet oasis of the Poppies Bali hotel with 20 great thach-roofed bungalows, swimming pool and beautiful garden. Breakfast is served either at your terrace or in their restaurant.
Since it's a very popular place try to book way ahead...(around US$ 95-115 per night)


The Kuta Lagoon Hotel:
At the Kuta Lagoon Resort all of the rooms have lagoon pool view and the place is beautifully set among bamboo, tropical flowers and Balinese statues holding jugs of water pouring straight into the pool. It’s obvious where the hotel got its name from.
One of the big surprises along Jalan Legian with all its restaurants, clubs and shops... (around US$54-US$181 per night)


Hard Rock Hotel Bali:
Just across the street from the sandy beach of Kuta where you can enjoy a ‘rocky’ but comfortable holiday experience at one of the most beautiful and original pools we’ve experienced till now.
Feel like renting a Harley Davidson for the day? Then this is one of the Bali accommodations to go to...(around US$175-US$582 per night)


Kuta Sea view Boutique Resort & Spa:
Looking for one of those small scale Bali accommodations along Kuta beachfront? Then this resort is a great option. The 80 modern Balinese styled guestrooms are nicely decorated and are surrounded by green gardens. The deluxe rooms have a relaxing lounge seat on the balcony.
The pool is surrounded by comfortable sun loungers and their restaurant attracts many travelers passing by...(around US$112-US$294 per night)


The Mercure Bali:
When I walked into the hotel lobby I was impressed the first moment I saw the hotel lobby, the courtyard with the palm trees and the fish pond in the middle of the building.
From their rooftop swimming pool you have the best view of the the Bali Kuta beach area... (around US$101-358 per night)


Grand Istana Rama:
Their location is just perfect, it’s not far from shops, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. Even though it’s located on the busy Jalan Pantai Kuta the hotel is very quiet.
I was very surprised to see such a big hotel complex with beautiful gardens on a location like this since it is a very congested area...

Bali Padma Hotel:
Right on the beach in Legian, this Bali beach resort got it right with Balinese design and atmosphere surrounded by plenty of tropical flowers and trees.
If you ask me they should have changed their name into Bali Flower Hotel instead. Great sunset views and popular restaurants... (around US$463 per night)


Ramada Resort Camakila:
This big Balinese resort is located at Legian beach and has two attractive swimming pools. From their infinity pool you can gaze over the ocean. And if you want to enjoy a cocktail while admiring the sunset you should head up to their rooftop bar.
The minimal decorated pool and garden rooms are spacious and their suites have a living area...(around US$150-US$650 per night)


Bali Niksoma Legian:
This Bali beach resort has a classy feel to it with a modern Balinese style throughout the resort and interior of the rooms. In their rooms Niksoma has used dark natural colors and minimum furniture.
The Niksoma suites all have four poster beds, living area and warm dark parquet floors. An eye catching feature is their two level pool with direct views of the ocean... (around US$153-US$400 per night excl Villa)


O-ce-n Apartments by Outrigger Bali:
If you want to be just meters from good restaurants and the beach then this is one of the Bali accommodations you should consider. Their contemporary styled condos are all fully serviced, very clean and the staff are known to be very friendly.
The food at O-ce-n is particularly good. Break-fast is freshly prepared and the seafood buffet at the Flying Fish Restaurant should not be missed... (around US$162-US$353 per night)


All Seasons Resort Legian Bali:
This is one of those Bali accommodations that is ideally located amid shops and restaurants. Right in the middle of Legian you can either walk to Double 66 or to Jalan Padma.
The rooms have minimum modern furniture with an additional seating area, balcony and even an ipod docking station...
The friendly staff create a relaxing and informal atmosphere... (around US$72-US$232 per night)


Legian Beach Hotel:
This Indonesian style resort is one of the few bigger Bali accommodations that is located right at the beach. At this Bali beach resort you can wander from the pool to the beach and straight into the ocean. The bungalow rooms are highly recommended.
The resort is located between Legian and Kuta, so you can easily go to both villages to check out the restaurants, shops and clubs... (around US$142-US$483 per night)


Maharta Beach Resort Bali:
Managed by Bali Niksoma this resort has a clean and fresh appearance. They have three types of rooms, all furnished with a Balinese touch. The rooms however tend to be small.
The staff will take extra effort to make your stay more enjoyable here. The gardens are all well kept and the beach is just a minute from your door. This place is perfect for those who want to enjoy the Kuta area while staying at a quality resort...(around US$108-US215 per night)


Hotel Puri Raja Legian:
Bali accommodations right at Kuta or Legian beach are scarce, that is why this small scale hotel is very popular. It has only 70 rooms but with two attractive swimming pools. So enough space to swim around. Their rooms have a balcony or verandah. If you want to stay near the pool go for the deluxe rooms.
Shops and restaurants are around the corner and if you want to enjoy more action just walk along the beach towards the Kuta area... (around USD$103-US$180 per night)


Ramayana Resort:
What the hotel lacks in view or bungalows it makes up with their wide range of facilities and their choice of luxury rooms. You don’t have to go far... Bali Kuta beach with its beautiful orange/purple sunset is only a 5/10 minutes stroll from the Ramayana.
This is also the place where you'll find one of our favorite restaurants; the Gabah Restaurant & Bar...(around US$95-US$462 per night)


The Patra Bali Resort & Villas:
Another family oriented resort is the Patra Bali located in Tuban. Set along the beach there is a path that leads to Kuta in 20 minutes.
This big resort has shallow pools and a kids club. For the adults there are sun beds and a bar at the pool, restaurants and a spa. The rooms are found in Balinese styled buildings set in a tropical garden...(around USD$136-USD$225 per night excl Villas)


Hotel Santika Premiere Beach Resort Bali:
Close to the hustle and bustle of Kuta with all its shops, restaurants and bars you'll find this serene beach front hotel with lovely gardens, swimming pools and plenty of sun loungers on the beach and around the pools. Smiling staff is all over the place and their buffet breakfast is extensive.
There are various rooms to choose from and some have even butler service...(around US$131-US$365 per night)


Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel:
One of the Bali accommodations ideally located along the busy Kartika street with all its restaurants and shops and the seafront (beach is a five-minute walk).
The hotel's garden is big too, swimming pool with bar and several bridges and there is a lot of entertainment such as water polo, beach volleybal, beach soccer and other stuff. Great resort for kids and those attending an onsite wedding...(around US$180-US$775 per night)


Ramada Bintang Bali Resort:
This is one of the Bali accommodations ideal for families with young kids as their Kid's Club is for free (4-12 years old), there are family connecting rooms and they even have cheap baby sitting option so the parents can have some quality time as well.
The big Discovery Mall is just a 10-minute walk along the water front so you can avoid the busy Jalan Kartika with its many shops and touts...(around US$123-US$298 per night)


Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali, Tuban:
Another kid-friendly hotel in the south of Kuta, Tuban with big suites having 2 rooms, one the main bedroom and the other a smaller one with bunk beds or sofa beds for the kids.
Takes around 10 minutes to the Discovery Mall and the many bars and restaurants along Jalan Kartika...

Bali Dynasty Hotel:
Situated on the coast in Tuban, just next to Bali Kuta beach is on of the most family-friendly Bali accommodations with a pool and activity club specially designed for kids looked after by experienced staff.
Isn’t this how a holiday with the kids always should have been while dozing in the adult-only stone bed pool or spa?

Green Garden Beach Resort and Spa:
Green Garden manages several Bali accommodations in the Kuta area, of which one is the Garden Beach resort. The minimum age for staying at this resort is 18 years so this makes it a great get-away for couples or groups of friends.
Despite the absence of an elevator the top floor rooms are popular as you can feel the sea breeze coming in over the spacious balcony. This place is also an excellent option if you need to catch an early flight...(around US$78-US$140 per night)


The Vira Bali Hotel:
This hotel is located just 10 minutes from the airport. So if you have an early flight than this is one of the excellent Bali accommodations to stay at.
The pool, restaurant and rooms are well kept and comfortable. As it is located along the main street in Tuban it's a bit of a walk to get to the Kuta action, but by taxi you are there within minutes.
After crossing the street you will find the beach...(around US$95-US$200 per night)


Febri's Hotel & Spa:
This is another of the Bali accommodations with real value for money, ideal for families and is known for their service minded staff, cleanliness and spacious rooms.
It is located just outside the 'craziness' of Kuta so ideal for those who want to enjoy Kuta's charm but at the same want to have some quiet moments too.
Restaurants, shops and beach are just a stone throw away, while the Febris' spa is highly recommended...(around US$68-US$174 per night)
